Background

BCSIR Laboratories, Dhaka   

Bangladesh Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (BCSIR) is the leading research organization in Bangladesh. BCSIR Laboratories, Dhaka is the largest multi-disciplinary institute of BCSIR, having seven research laboratories, 76 active scientists supported by about 60 scientific and technical personnel. BCSIR laboratories trace its roots back to the days of East Pakistan. East Regional Laboratories of Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR) was established in Dhaka in 1955. After the independence of Bangladesh in 1971, BCSIR was established by a resolution of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh which subsequently was reconstituted through a Presidential Ordinance namely Ordinance No. (V) of 1978.

The primary research activities are mostly applied research with a glimpse of basic research, essential for developing scientific and technological bases of the scientists, which ultimately contribute to the development of the country while applied research is concerned with the development of technologies related to the industries and useful to the current needs of the country.

It covers a wide spectrum of science and technology research – from tissue culture, solar science, biological, chemicals, drugs, genomics, biotechnology, biorefinery, nanotechnology to instrumentation, environmental engineering, and software technology. It provides significant technological intervention in many areas with regarding to societal efforts which include environment, health, drinking water, food, housing, energy, agricultural sectors.
                                                        
                              
 
In addition to the R&D activities, scientists are also engaged in offering analytical and testing services to public and private entrepreneurs and industrialist to solve their problems for the greater interest of the country. BCSIR Laboratories, Dhaka plays a great role in S&T human resource development by providing the opportunity for students of different universities to learn more about science and scientific research through thesis, PhD guidance and fellowship programs.

BCSIR laboratories, Dhaka helps the nation to boost entrepreneurship, which could lead to enhanced creation and commercialization of innovations, incepting the development of new economic sectors. The organization plays a key role to support the government’s programmes through proper research direction that is aligned with the country’s priorities along with mandate and its science and technology competence.
